4-hers win 1st at National Poultry Judging competition!

The team of Elizabeth Peluso, Connor Howard, Matthew Peuso (Craven County 4-H), and Tessa Darnell (Halifax County 4-H) won the 2023 National 4-H Poultry Judging Contest hosted by the University of Kentucky in Louisville. Matthew, Elizabeth, and Connor have been participating in Poultry Judging since they were juniors – over the last 6 years. They came in 2nd place at the State-Level competition hosted by North Carolina State University this year. When the 1st-place team decided not to compete at Nationals, NCSU asked them to represent North Carolina and they jumped at the chance. They also realized that they needed a 4th member to be truly competitive at that level. Tessa Darnell competed at the State contest as an individual and had incredibly high scores. While this was her first year competing, it would also be her last, as Tessa ages out of 4-H next year. With a great team who worked together well, the four of them spent hours online and in-person practicing and preparing for the National competition. Traveling to KY, they worked hard during the 5-hour contest that required them to judge Egg Production Hens, Market Poultry, and Market Eggs against USDA standards and the poultry specialists who set up the competition. They won 8 individual awards and were top 3 team in each of the categories and finished as the overall National Champion Poultry Judging Team out of 17 Teams from across the country from California to Texas to Georgia to New York to Minnesota and 12 other states. North Carolina has never won this competition since it began in 1965. We are so proud of our 4-Hers and look forward to seeing all that they continue to accomplish. If you wish to participate in 4-H please contact your local NC Extension Office.

Cove Explorers Finish Library Flowerbed Makeover

Our newest 4-H Club, the Cove Explorers finished their makeover of the Cove City Library! Youth worked dilligently to plant and mulch the entire side of the building over 4 separate meetings, taking out weeds and debris, adding in flowers and plants, and learning about gardening care. Many of the flowers and mulch are donations from Lowe’s Home Improvement in New Bern and Kinston.Flowerbed before (left) and after (right) images
