Craven County 4-Hers haven’t let the pandemic stand in the way of their learning – safely. 4-Hers Matthew Peluso (14), Elizabeth Peluso (12), Connor Howard (12), Anna Howard (11), and Ethan Gaskins (12) have been studying poultry judging online via Zoom. They have been learning how to identify different parts of meat, grade ready-to-cook carcasses, grade broken-out, interior, and exterior eggs, grade live birds (through picture and video) and give oral reasons justifying why they made their choices and finally a newly-added category of further processed products. These categories make up the State 4-H Poultry Judging Contest held each year at the NC State University Poultry Unit. Due to safety concerns, the contest was held online for the second year in a row, and Craven County youth have embraced this! Constantly practicing both on their own and through Zoom with their teammates, the Craven County team won 2nd place Junior Team in the State 4-H Competition with team members Elizabeth, Connor, Anna, and Ethan! Matthew is a senior and participated with great success as an individual in the competition! These 4-Hers are to be commended and we look forward to their continued success in the Poultry Program in the coming year.
