Craven 4-H Livestock Project 2026

The Coastal Plains Livestock Project offers Craven County 4-H youth a meaningful way to learn about animal science, responsibility, and leadership while working with animals they care about. Whether raising beef cattle, sheep, goats, or swine, participants gain practical hands-on experience in animal health, nutrition, daily care, and showmanship—all while building confidence and life skills that extend beyond the barn.

Learning Through Experience

As part of the Coastal Plains Livestock Project, Craven County youth:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of animal behavior and welfare

  • Learn how to properly feed, groom, and care for livestock

  • Practice record keeping, goal setting, and financial responsibility

  • Strengthen communication and leadership by presenting animals at shows and events

Through guidance from caring volunteers and project advisors, members grow in responsibility and accountability, learning what it takes to care for animals with compassion and consistency.

Community & Growth

Participation in this project also connects youth with peers who share similar interests, creating friendships and mentorship opportunities. The project culminates in local livestock shows and events where youth can showcase their hard work, celebrate achievements, and receive recognition for their dedication and progress.

Registration Process

Youth in the project must speak to the 4-H Agent and/or the Livestock Agent prior to registration so that they are able to make sure you have the necessary information and housing for the project. The deadline for having animals on site is February 14th so youth and parents should have animals selected well in advance of that date. Youth and Parents are responsible for knowing all deadlines, rules, and regulations. Youth are required to be registered in 4-H Online to participate.
