Most weeds in landscape or lawns can be easily controlled when the correct product is chosen and applied at the right time. Within NC, we have the advantage to view the active ingredient, timing, weed spectrum controlled, precautions, and more within the NC Agricultural Chemicals Manual published yearly. There is also another reality. Some weeds are extremely difficult to control. For these, there are basically three options as noted below.
1. Glyphosate – This herbicide will generally kill most weeds. For some, especially those that are very large/mature, have rhizomes, or have multiple deep roots, multiple applications may be necessary. (Realize that this herbicide is non-selective and may kill all vegetation)
2. Garlon (Triiclopyr) – This herbicide is generally applied to woody plants and vines, annuals, and perennial broadleaf weeds. It is labeled for native or unimproved grasses.
3. Goats – Yes, that’s right. If the above two products do not work, graze the area with a goat! In some cases, this is the last and only option. (Or, if you prefer, dig up the weeds by hand.)
