Sooner or later we all are faced with some mammal, bird, insect, or reptile that has decided to reside within our house. Bats, mice, squirrels, raccoon, snakes and other critters may choose to live within our home (or yard) because it offers adequate shelter, food and water. Insect and insect related pests can be eliminated by local insect exterminating companies. For other animals, one can either can trap the animal on your own (with permits) or one can pay a Wildlife Control Agent to remove the wildlife. No government agency has this task as their responsibility unless the animal has obvious signs of rabies or may potentially expose pets to rabies.
Prior to contacting an agent, review information on preventing and co-existing with specific wildlife species on the web page, Preventing Wildlife Conflicts.. This page provides specific information as it relates to various pests that may invade homes or yards. Another resource that offers details, permits and guidance is the NC Extension Gardener Handbook chapter, Wildlife.
When the pest is positively identified and one knows the problem is severe, a list provided by the NC Wildlife Resource Commission will identify a Wildlife Control Agents. These individuals can remove many of our unwelcome house guest for a fee.
