We know everyone is excited as we are about summer getting here! Wilkes County 4-H is happy to announce our lineup for summer that will include some fun activities for all of our 4-H members! Each event will be available in 4-H Online on May 2nd.  More details about each event can be found on 4-H online when you register.

Not currently a 4-H member? No problem! You can still sign up for free in 4-H Online.

Other activities may be added, so stay tuned for updates! In the event there is a change in cost, or departure time, we will let everyone know before the event!

Below is a list of all our planned activities:

Rendezvous Mountain Nature Walk – May 31st  (Updated Date) 

9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Cost: Free

Come explore Rendezvous Mountain State Park to kick off our summer fun! We will have a simple nature walk followed by a scavenger hunt to learn more about all the wildlife around us!

There is no limit to the number of participants for this activity, but youth under the age of 9 will need a parent/guardian in attendance

We will meet at Rendezvous Mountain.

Fly Fishing Workshop – June 2nd 

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Cost: $20

Join us for a fly tying and casting workshop to learn the basics of fly fishing! We will meet at the Wilkes County Cooperative Extension office at 9:00 a.m., and practice fly tying before we head outside to practice different casting methods. Afterwards we will head over to cub creek park to try our hand at catching fish!

This activity is limited to five participants between the ages of 9 and 18, and the cost is $20. If there are more than five youth interested, we will conduct additional workshops during the summer.

Foothills Skillathon Clinic – June 4th

Time: 9:00 a.m.

Cost: $10

Wilkes, Caldwell, and Catawba Counties are joining forces to conduct a skillathon clinic designed to introduce beginners to the contest. Participants will learn about different livestock breeds, tools, and feedstuffs to name a few!

This would be a great opportunity for a new FFA or 4-H team to practice for the state competition, or to learn more about livestock.

4-H Art Party! – June 6th

Time: 2:00 p.m.

Cost: $5

Join our artist friend, Samantha Lusk, as we put paint to canvas to create a masterpiece! At this workshop you will learn painting techniques and create your own piece of artwork with the help of our artist. This is open to Cloverbuds and 4-H members. This activity will be held at the Extension office, and a canvas, brushes, and paint will be provided. Limited to 15 participants.

Grandfather Mountain – June 8th

Time: 8:45 a.m.

Cost: $10 per child, $15 per adult

Alleghany, Wilkes, and Yadkin County 4-H will be heading west to visit Grandfather Mountain.

We will depart from the Wilkes County Cooperative Extension office at approximately 8:45 a.m. that day. Participants will need to bring their own lunch and we will picnic while we are there. Youth under the age of 9 will need a parent/guardian in attendance as well. We can fit seven passengers in our office van, but we can make arrangements to accommodate participants.

Western Mock Poultry Competition – June 13th

Time: TBA

Wilkes Community College is hosting a mock poultry judging competition for 4-H teams preparing for the state competition. More information , including how to register, will be released at a later date, and we will be sure to share that information when it becomes available!

District Activity Day – June 17th

Location: Central Wilkes Middle School

Wilkes County has the pleasure of hosting the North Central 4-H District Activity Day! This event will see 4-H members from across the twenty counties in our district to give 4-H Presentations, show off their sewing skills in the Fashion Revue, or exhibit their talent! There are a number of different categories, so 4-H’ers can present on a topic they are passionate about!

North Carolina Zoo – June 21st

Time: TBD

Cost: $15

Join us for a fantastic day at the North Carolina Zoo! We will be touring the Zoo and learning about various animals, insects, plants, and more along our adventure through the zoo. We will depart from the Extension and head to Asheboro. As with the Grandfather Mountain trip, youth under the age of 9 will need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

The Busy World of Bees – June 28th & June 30th

Age Range: 5-7

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Cloverbuds will learn all about bees and how they benefit the world around them! Participants will learn about pollination, what bees need to live, and much more through games and different activities!

We will conduct these activities at the Cooperative Extension office, and this event will be limited to 15 Cloverbuds.

Other activities/events may be added when we receive additional information, but there will be plenty of notice so that your child can participate!
