Training Materials for Worker Protection Updates
EPA’s Agricultural Worker Protection Standard (WPS) is aimed at reducing the risk of pesticide exposure and potential injury for agricultural workers and pesticide handlers. These standards were revised in 2015 with implementation of changes staggered between 2016-2018. The intentions of these rules and revisions are to decrease the pesticide exposure incidents among farmworkers and their family members. A previous post providing an overview of these changes is found at https://craven.ces.ncsu.edu/2017/01/revised-worker-protection-standards/
One of the changes involves annual training of workers prior to any work tasks. Specific subjects are required for each worker, depending upon whether they work with pesticides or perform routine farm tasks. Only a certified applicator of restricted use pesticides, individuals completing a Train-the-Trainer program approved by EPA, or those that are an IDALS designated trainer may provide this training. Additionally, specific materials and subjects must be included in these trainings. Approved materials have been provided by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
