It was the craziest day I’ve ever had. That morning I was shearing llamas . . . that’s right, LLAMAS. If you’ve never sheared a llama, it’s quite an experience: lots of thick fluffy wool . . . imagine trying to cut tall grass while your lawn moves around. And that was just the morning! That afternoon, I took three teenagers to meet with our Senator in Raleigh so that they would have the opportunity to experience citizenship firsthand and explain what was important to the youth in our community. It was a crazy day, but definitely rewarding: I taught someone how to care for an animal and one of the teens made a decision that changed her career goals based on that day. That is what 4-H is all about!

My name is Ashley Brooks and I am the new 4-H Agent for Craven County. I grew up as a member of 4-H in Halifax County, NC. I loved it so much, that I went back to Halifax County after school as the 4-H Agent there for four years. My love of both the 4-H Program and Coastal Carolina, brought me to Craven County and I am very excited to be continuing my life here. I hope that I will be able to have just as many wonderfully crazy days as I had in Halifax.

Those familiar with 4-H, probably remember all of the traditional animal and agriculture programs that were available years ago. We still have those amazing programs but 4-H has expanded to include a wealth of fun and learning in a wide variety of camps, clubs, and programs for youth ages 5-18 years old!

The four H’s stand for “Head, Heart, Hands, and Health” emphasizing the program’s focus of “learn by doing”. 4-H teaches youth development in leadership, character building, workforce skills, and a variety of educational programming. Want to raise a chicken, build a robot, go to camp, do fun science experiments, participate in community service, or travel to meet new people? These are just a small portion of the things that you can do in 4-H! The best part? It’s absolutely free to join! No uniforms, no membership fees! If you would like to be a part of 4-H, just let me know! Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, or guardian, we have programs for your youth!
